The event will commemorate Black Wednesday, 19 October 1977 when the apartheid regime clamped down on the media, banning newspapers, the World and Weekend and jailing journalists.
Freedom of expression and of the media is now enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic in the free and democratic South Africa.
The Presidency will use National Press Freedom Day to encourage interaction and good relations between government and the media.
