The Provincial Government will in its endeavour to deal with the increasing cases of unlicensed gambling operations and participation in unlicensed gambling activities in the Province, embark on a destruction of illegal gambling machines exercise at Klerksdorp Industrial Area, tomorrow, Friday, 21 August 2015. The destruction to be led by Premier of Bokone Bophirima Province Supra Obakeng Ramoeletsi Mahumapelo, MEC for Finance, Economy and Enterprise Development, Wendy Joy Nelson and the North West Gambling Board executive, will be performed as part of the Setsokotsane activities currently underway at Matlosana Local Municipality.
According to the North West Gambling Board, these unlicensed gambling operations are estimated to collect over R500 000 000.00 in revenue per annum, taking away business from legitimate, law-abiding entrepreneurs and gambling operators who pay taxes and contribute to government services and infrastructure development. These illegal operations also cost the Provincial economy over R40 000 000.00 a year in lost gambling revenue.
This year’s destruction will be held under the theme “Liberating the Provincial economy and its people from unlicensed gambling operation.”
As part of the day’s programme, Premier Mahumapelo will also join MEC for Social Development, Fenny Gaolaolwe, for the first launch of Municipal Women’s Forum at Jakaranda farm in Matlosana Local Municipality.
Prioritised by the Departmental Office on the Status of Women for establishment this financial year, these Women’s forums will not only assist government in maintaining close liaison with women formations at local level, but will also serve as an opportune platform to discuss, plan and seek consensus amongst key role players in gender mainstreaming. More than 1000 women from various women formations in the Province, are expected to attend this event.
