Premier Mathabatha to launch Vhembe District Development Model

The Premier of Limpopo, Chupu Stanley Mathabatha continues to launch District Development Model in the Province. This follows the official launch of Development Model in Limpopo Province by President Cyril Ramaphosa last year on the 26th November 2019 at Ga-Shongoane Sports Ground, Waterberg and subsequently Premier Mathabatha launched the Capricorn District Development (DDM) at Ceres Village, Aganang Cluster, Polokwane Municipality early February this year. Premier has made a commitment to launch DDM of all the Five Districts of the Province. This will ensure that all of the Province’s five Districts have One District Plan; with One Budget – Promotes and Emphasise Khawuleza way of bringing services to the people.

In his recent State of the Province Address, Premier Mathabatha has said that government has managed to place the Province, which is rural on a pedestal for higher growth trajectory.
“It is within this context, that we are implementing some of the major catalytic projects, which are aimed at stimulating economic growth and job creation.
These projects include the Musina-Makhado SEZ, the proposed Tubatse SEZ, the revitalisation of the Industrial Parks, agricultural and several mining initiatives. With the additional investment commitment of 6.1 billion US dollars, the number of projected jobs to be created by Musina-Makhado SEZ project has since being revised upward from the initial 21 000 to 26 000”, said Premier Mathabatha.

The District of Vhembe which is known as the fruit basket of the Province is also the home of Musina-Makhado SEZ. Agriculture is one of the identified pillars for growing the economy of the Province and that of Vhembe District. Vhembe has Nwanedi Agri-Hub, based in Musina which serves more than 200 rural farmers who are packaging and sending their agricultural products to South African market and the rest of the world.

The model aims to accelerate, align and integrate service delivery under a single development plan per district or metro that is developed jointly by national, provincial and local government as well as business, labour and community in each district. Each district plan will ensure that national priorities such as economic growth and employment, improvements to living conditions, the fight against crime and corruption and better education outcomes are attended to in the locality concerned. This development approach ensures that planning and spending across the three spheres of government is integrated and aligned and that each district plan is developed with the interests and inputs of communities taken into account upfront.

The intervention is also in line with the National Development Plan, which outlines the importance of building a capable state in partnership with the citizens of this country. This requires well-run and effectively coordinated state institutions staffed by skilled public servants who are committed to the public good and capable of delivering consistently high-quality services for all South Africans.
