Premier Sisi Ntombela launches 16 Days of Activism for no Violence against Women and Children, 23 Nov

Free State to launch 16 days of Activism Programme in Botshabelo

In line with the Constitution, 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign by the South African government. The 16 Days of Activism For No Violence against Women and Children Campaign is an annual, awareness-raising campaign endorsed by the United Nations (UN) that begins on the 25th of November each year and runs through until the 10th of December.

South Africa adopted the 16 Days Activism Campaign For No Violence Against Women and Children in 1998, as one of the intervention strategies towards creating a society free of violence. This is also in line with the National Development Plan Vision 2030 (NDP), which aspires to create a society where women can walk freely in the streets and children can play safely outside.

The Premier of the Free State, Sefora Sisi Ntombela will be joined by civil society and faith-based organizations, traditional leaders, the private sector, and leaders of government institutions from all corners of the Free State, in Botshabelo to launch  this year’s programme under  the theme: “#HearMeToo: End Violence against Women and Children.”

Premier Ntombela has called on men and women across the province to work together to put an end to all forms of violence, including those which are gender- based.

“We must curb all forms of violence, because violence is an inhibiting factor to the development of the South African state. High levels of crime, particularly serious and violent crimes, reinforce social injustices and sustain energy of fear and lack of safety amongst our citizens. This must stop”, said Premier Ntombela.
