Premier of Limpopo, Dr Phophi Ramathuba and Deputy Minister in The Presidency, Mr Kenny Morolong, will on Tuesday, 08 September 2026, lead the Limpopo launch of the Milestones of Freedom campaign at the University of Limpopo, Turfloop Campus.
The Milestones of Freedom campaign commemorates significant milestones in South Africa’s democratic history, including 30 years of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 50 years since the 1976 Youth Uprising, 60 years since the District Six forced removals and 70 years since the 1956 Women’s March.
Under the theme “Honouring the Past. Delivering the Future,” the campaign seeks to connect South Africa’s history of resistance, sacrifice and struggle with the responsibilities of the present generation, while reflecting on the progress made since the advent of democracy.
The campaign has been launched in the Free State, Western Cape, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Gauteng and Northern Cape.
The University of Limpopo has been selected as the venue for the provincial launch because of its significant history of student activism, political consciousness and resistance to apartheid. The institution, formerly known as the University of the North (Turfloop), became an important centre of student mobilisation and resistance, with generations of students contributing to the broader liberation struggle.
The launch will also highlight the history and legacy of student activism in Limpopo, including the contribution of former University of the North SRC President Onkgopotse Abram Tiro, as well as the role played by schools such as Hwiti High School in the 1976 student uprisings.
As part of the programme, former students and participants in the struggle will share their experiences, linking individual memories and acts of resistance to the broader history of the University of Limpopo and South Africa’s liberation struggle.

09:30–11:00: Guided tour to historic sites at the university
A guided tour to historical sites within the university with former students who will reflect on their experiences of student activism and resistance.
Premier Dr Ramathuba, Deputy Minister Morolong, the District and local leadership, will preside over the Lighting of the Torch of Freedom ceremony at the Thami Square within the University, a symbolic handover of the Torch of Freedom to the current Student Representative Council signalling the start of the tour, connecting individual stories of activism with the broader history of the University and the liberation struggle.
11:15–13:00: Keynote Address
Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba and Deputy Minister Kenny Morolong will deliver addresses reflecting on the significance of the Milestones of Freedom campaign and the importance of connecting the country’s history with its developmental future.
Following the programme, the Premier, Deputy Minister and other stakeholders will engage with members of the media.
