MEC Madikizela and Premier Zille to hand over houses in Delft

Tomorrow, Tuesday 18 February 2014, Western Cape MEC of Human Settlements Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape Premier Helen Zille and national MEC of Human Settlements Connie September will attend the official handover ceremony of housing units to beneficiaries of the Delft Symphony Precinct 3 & 5 Housing Project. It is the first major housing project in which alternate building materials (ABTs) have been used.

The use of ABTs refers to any form of home construction which uses building materials other than conventional brick-and-mortar. This approach represents an important innovation for human settlements development in light of escalating construction costs and the imperatives of climate change mitigation and building the green economy in the Western Cape. The benefits of ABTs include helping households to stay warmer in winter, have less damp in their houses and have reduced energy usage (and therefore reduced costs) to heat their homes.

This project has a budget of approximately R385 million and will deliver 1951 units when complete. The allocation of housing opportunities in the project will be split among backyarders and other communities.

Media are invited to attend. There will be opportunities for interviews and photographs.
