Premier Helen Zille and MEC Alan Winde launch Barn Khayelitsha, 18 Mar

Premier Helen Zille and Alan Winde, MEC of Economic Opportunities, will officially launch the Barn Khayelitsha. The initiative will deliver an economic boost for local tech entrepreneurs and residents in Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain.

The Barn will offer tech entrepreneurs the support they need to develop their business ideas into viable products. Incubators, such as the Bandwidth Barn in Woodstock, provide shared spaces for businesses, with meeting rooms and conference facilities.

They play a major role in increasing the success rate of start-ups and it’s projected the Barn Khayelitsha will ramp up job creation in Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain.

Funded by the Western Cape Government, it is a joint initiative between the Provincial Department of Economic Development and Tourism and the Cape Innovation and Technology Initiative (CiTi).

Premier Zille said: “Establishing the Western Cape as a hub of innovative businesses also remains a top priority.”

MEC Winde added that small businesses were a vital part of the economy.

“Incubators provide an excellent space for tech entrepreneurs to develop their ideas. It is government’s role to create an enabling environment for these enterprises to grow so they are able to add employment opportunities to our economy,” said MEC Winde.
