Premier David Makhura unveils statue of Bertha Gxowa during Women's Month , 19 Aug

Gauteng Premier David Makhura will, tomorrow Wednesday 19 August, lead proceedings to honour the late liberation struggle stalwart mamBertha Nonkumbi Gxowa.

Accompanied by Members of the Executive Council (MECs) and the Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Councillor Mondli Gungubele, the Premier will unveil Gxowa’s life-size statue at the Keditselana Cultural Village in Voslorus. Gxowa who died in November 2010 was one of the leaders of the 1956 Women's march against the pass laws. Her grave was, in November 2014, declared a provincial heritage site by the Provincial Heritage Resource Authority of Gauteng.

The event is part of the Gauteng’s women’s month celebrations jointly organized by the Provincial Government, Ekurhuleni Metro and the Bertha Gxowa Foundation.
