The Minister of Labour, Ms Mildred Oliphant is to host the Jobs Fair and Jobs Summit on 8 March 2013, in Madiba Banquet Hall, Potchefstroom, North West province.
The jobs summit is an initiative of the Department of Labour’s (DoL) Public Employment Services (PES) branch aimed at giving government and employers from all levels a platform to discuss ways and means of creating employment, whereas the jobs fair is aimed at creating an atmosphere where job seekers will be registered on the electronic system for possible matching and referrals.
This also gives them a chance to get more information such as learnerships, internships and bursaries. Job seekers includes those who dropped out of school or with exit certificates, university graduates plus workers who are under-employed and those who are retrenched will be given a chance to meet prospective.
In addition, the department will use the services of its highly trained career counsellors to empower the unemployed with skills to make informed choices when it comes to careers, entrepreneurial paths as well as community work or public works programme. The department’s electronically furnished bus will be handy to assist with capturing of information and matching the unemployed with the prospective employment.
Approximately 5 000 work seekers and a number of employers are expected to attend the North West Jobs Summit/Fairs.
The Minister will deliver a keynote address at the Jobs Summit held under the theme: “Jobs Summit and Jobs Fair - my job my future”. According to DoL, the Jobs Fair is among a range of initiatives being rolled out within the ambit of a branch called Public Employment Services as part of the DoL’s contribution to Government job creation initiatives.
In October 2012 DoL’s Director General told Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Labour that the department had placed 96 505 job seekers in job opportunities using (Essa). The branch will be working closely with the private sector, the Unemployment Insurance Fund, Productivity SA, the Department of Higher Education in the implementation of the Training Lay-off schemes, and initiatives designed to save and create jobs.
