Pinkdrive and SA's first women's health mobile mammography and gynaecology unit

The Department of Women Children and People with Disabilities in partnership with PinkDrive, invites the media to the launch of the PinkDrive and SA’s first women’s health mobile mammography and gynaecology unit, taking place tomorrow.

Launched in 2009, PinkDrive is South Africa’s best-loved community carer. It is an indispensible, tangible breast cancer non-profit organisation which powered South Africa’s first mobile mammography and educational units throughout the country with the message that “Early Detection Saves Lives”. These units provide a free service to all South African women who are medically un-ensured. To date, PinkDrive has provided over 5 500 free mammograms, educated over 90 000 women and men, done over 58 000 clinical examinations.

South Africa recently established itself as a firm leader in the continent’s fight against cervical cancer as local government launched a large-scale human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine campaign. Aiming to vaccinate an estimated 500 000 girls in 17 000 schools, the initiative has been lauded as a major step towards the ultimate prevention of this all too often fatal disease.

PinkDrive has realised and recognised the growing need in taking health to the women of the country and it is for this reason that PinkDrive has now included general health assessments and gynaecology sections onto the mobile units.
