Parliament's mineral resources committee to assess mines and interact with communities, 2 to 6 Feb

MINERAL RESOURCES COMMITTEE TO ASSESS MINES AND INTERACT WITH COMMUNITIES

The Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources will from Monday (2 February) to Friday (6 February) conduct oversight visits to KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

The purpose of the visits, among other things, is to inspect various mining companies and mines, investigate the issue of beneficiation, and interact with communities and traditional leaders. The Committee delegation will be led by Chairperson Mr Sahlulele Luzipo.

The KwaZulu-Natal leg is as follows:
1.            Date: 2 February
Time: 9 am-1 pm
Venue: Derelict mine in Osizweni, Newcastle
Purpose: To assess the impact of illegal coal mining on the Mzamo High School, which is situated on the same site as the mine.

2.            Date: 3 February
Time: 9.30 am-1 pm
Venue: Somkhele Colliery, KwaHlabisa
Purpose: To assess conditions of operations and look into the issue of beneficiation

3.            Date: 4 February
Time: 9 am-3 pm
Venue: Richards Bay Minerals
Purpose: To assess the rehabilitation of land after mining and investigate beneficiation.

The Eastern Cape leg is as follows:
4.            Date: 5 February
Time: 10 am-12.30 pm
Venue: One Stop Shop (an office tasked with helping former miners), Umthatha
Purpose: To establish if the One Stop Shop is serving its purpose and see if there is a need for another one

Date: 5 February
Time: 4 pm-7.30 pm
Venue: Umthatha
Purpose: To discuss issues relating to the operation of the Ikhwezi Quarries and beneficiation

5.            Date: 6 February
Time: 10 am-1 pm
Venue: Town Hall, Umthatha
Purpose: Meeting with traditional leaders to discuss issues related to mining
