Parliament's community outreach and celebration of Madiba at 95

Parliamentary staff and 100 learners will gather at Parliament tomorrow (Thursday, 18 July) to sing happy birthday for Madiba as he celebrates his 95th birthday.

The event marks the international call to dedicate 67 minutes to doing community work to celebrate Nelson Mandela Day, under the theme “Take action, inspire change, make everyday a Mandela Day.”

Activities planned for the day include staff participation in various projects around Cape Town, the writing of birthday messages and the painting of a canvass by the learners. The learners and staff will also release balloons in the colours of the South African flag to honour and celebrate Madiba’s birthday.

These initiatives are aimed at honouring Nelson Mandela’s life, legacy and his selfless contribution to humanity and reconciliation.

Projects to be visited are:

  1. Hillary House in Khayelitsha, to start a vegetable garden;
  2. St Francis Home in Athlone, to start a vegetable garden and play games with children;
  3. Ekuphumleni old age home in Gugulethu, for donations and painting; and
  4. Women on Farms Project in Stellenbosch, for gardening services.
