Parliament visits universities in Mpumalanga and Gauteng, 3 to 6 Feb

Mbombela and Tshwane visits to kick off Committee’s Programme

Two key matters - student registration processes and NSFAS-related issues - will be among those on the agenda when the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training kicks off its 2015 programme with oversight visits to Mpumalanga and Gauteng from 3-6 February.

The Committee will visit four institutions of higher learning in the two provinces as part of its oversight work.

The first stop will be the University of Mpumalanga – which is one of the country’s two newest universities – at the main campus in Mbombela on Tuesday, 3 February. The Committee will remain in Mbombela for a meeting with the Ehlanzeni TVET College on Wednesday, 4 February.

Then the focus will turn to Gauteng, where the MPs will visit the Tshwane University of Technology Soshanguve South campus on Thursday, 5 February and the Tshwane North TVET College Pretoria campus on Friday, 6 February.

Committee Chairperson Ms Yvonne Phosa said: “These visits will enable us to get first-hand experience into how issues such as the student registration processes and the allocation of the NSFAS funds have been going. We will further be able to identify whether there is any need for us as a Committee to intervene on any challenges that might arise with the main aim of ensuring that there is a betterment of our higher education and training sector.”

The attached draft programmes outline further details on the oversight visits to each of the four tertiary institutions:
