Parliament visits North West Municipalities, 21 to 23 Apr

North West Municipalities under spotlight

The Select Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will from Tuesday visit three North West municipalities to assess whether there has been any progress made in turning around Madibeng, Ngaka Modiri Molema and Matlosana municipalities.

In March this year, the MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements in that province tabled, before the National Council of Provinces, notices of interventions in terms of Section 139 (1) (b) of the Constitution and in terms of the rules of the NCOP, the Select Committee for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs is obliged to visit the affected municipalities to assess progress and challenges experienced since the intervention and advise the NCOP on the way forward.

Committee Chairperson Mr Jihad Mohapi says the Committee will do this by consulting and soliciting inputs from the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mayors, Speakers, Councilors as well as representatives from SALGA, Organised Labour, Business, including Youth and Women formations.

The visit will start at Madibeng on 21 April, Ngaka Modiri Molema on 22 April and Matlosana on 23 April.
