Parliament visits KwaZulu-Natal, 2 to 6 Feb

Basic Education Committee visits KZN

The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education will this next week, 2-6 February visit schools in KwaZulu-Natal to assess the state of readiness for the 2015 school year as well as monitor teaching and learning progress so far. The visit will focus on three districts within the province, namely; uMzinyathi, iLembe and uMkhanyakude.

The visit will also seek to investigate reasons that led to the province experiencing the steepest decline in the 2014 National Senior Certificate results as well as the unfortunate incident of group copying identified by Umalusi. “These stated reasons necessitated this visit to assist in identifying the root causes as well as reversing these worrying trends,” said Ms Nomalungelo Gina, Chairperson of the Committee.
The Committee will interact with teachers, learners and parents and is hopeful that viable solutions will be found. “What is important to this Committee is ensuring that children of this country receive quality education that will unlock doors of prosperity and meaningfully contribute to the fight against the triple challenges of unemployment, poverty and equality,” Ms Gina emphasised. The Committee will also visit under-performing schools within the identified districts to ensure that major shortcomings do not recur in the 2015 school year.

On the first day of the visit the Committee will interact with the Provincial Department of Education leadership, leaders of teachers unions, district managers and School Governing Bodies.
