Parliament undertakes oversight visit to Eastern Cape, 7 to 11 Sept

Eastern Cape oversight visit by Select Committees on COGTA, Security and Petitions

Select Committees on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Security and Justice and Petitions will, from 7 to 11 September, conduct oversight visits to the Makana Local Municipality and Mthatha Maximum Prison. These Committees will also hold public hearings on service delivery petitions by residents of Mthatha, Eastern Cape.

The visit to the Makana Local Municipality, as scheduled for Tuesday 8 September, is a follow-up visit by the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Select Committee and is intended to gauge whether the placing of this municipality under provincial administration has improved the running of this municipality.

The Committee will do this through an interaction with municipal stakeholders such as the Makana Ratepayers’ Association, Business sector, Political Parties, Women and Youth formations as well as representatives from Eastern Cape’s Department of CoGTA.

On Wednesday, 9 September, during a visit to Mthatha Maximum prison, Security and Justice Committee members will interact with plans this correctional centre has in ensuring that it deals with challenges facing it. Challenges include overcrowding, long periods of detention for a large number of awaiting trial detainees as well as vague rehabilitation programmes, among others.

On Thursday 10, the Petitions Committee will hold public hearings as a response to petition by residents of Mthatha who have been calling for the National Council of Provinces to help them have their gravel roads tarred and the construction of bridges.

On Friday 11, the Committee will hear petitions against the Transkei Road Transport Corporation (TRTC) which has been accused of failure to pay pension monies and severance packages to its former employees.
