Committee on Labour seeks input from steel and mineworkers on national minimum wage
The Portfolio Committee on Labour will this week interact with mineworkers (North West) and steelworkers (Gauteng) on the national minimum wage. This will be the second leg of the public hearings on the national minimum wage.
The first leg started in the Western Cape where farmworkers and domestic workers shared views with the Committee.
The Chairperson of the Committee, Ms Lumka Yengeni, warned that this was not a political party event, rather an interaction with all South Africans on an important matter. Parliament understands that people from different backgrounds and different political affiliations will never agree on some things. That should not discourage Parliament from looking to address the issue of inequality and poverty levels in line with government initiatives.
