Parliament holds meeting with stakeholders on progress of Acid Mine Drainage challenges, 5 Nov

The Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation will tomorrow hold a meeting with various stakeholders regarding progress in interventions in relations to the Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) challenge in South African mines and related impact on groundwater, rivers, and dams.

The stakeholders that will brief the committee include the Departments of Water and Sanitation and the Chamber of Mines. This meeting will give the committee an opportunity to understand progress as well as impact of the interventions so far. The meeting is in line with recommendations contained in the legacy report of the 4th Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Water and Environmental Affairs appealing the Department of Water Affairs to produce a business plan to tackle AMD in the short, medium and long term. This plan was to include timelines, budgetary projections and plan of action.

This meeting will give the Committee an opportunity to consider implementation of this plan with the aim of ensuring full implementation.
