Parliament assesses progress in Makana Municipality, 25 Feb

The Select Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will this Wednesday (25 February) gauge progress made in turning around the Makana local municipality in the Eastern Cape.

On 10 September 2014, the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in the Eastern Cape tabled a notice of intervention in terms of section 139 (1) (b) of the Constitution of RSA (Act No. 108 of 1996). Subsequent to the tabling, the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces referred the notice, in terms of Rule 101 to the Select Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs for consideration and reporting.

Committee Chairperson, Mr Jihad Mohapi, says the Committee will be visiting this municipality to assess progress made since the intervention. It will do so by receiving reports from stakeholders such as; the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mayor, Speaker of the Council, Municipal Manager, local councillors, SALGA, organised labour and business sector as well as representatives for Women and Youth formations in that municipality.

“It is after receiving and interacting with all the reports that we will be able to adequately advise the NCOP on what steps should be taken in dealing with challenges facing this municipality,” said Mr Mohapi.

The meeting will take place this Wednesday at the Grahamstown City Hall from 08h30.
