Parliament assesses progress in KwaZulu-Natal Municipalities, 21 to 23 Oct

The Select Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will this week asses progress in three KwaZulu-Natal local municipalities, Abaqulusi, Imbazane and Umvoti.

Due to their underperformance and service delivery challenges, these municipalities were placed under mandatory provincial intervention in terms of section 139 (1) (b) of the Constitution during the 2012/13 financial year.

The Committee will therefore assess whether the turnaround strategies to improve performance in these municipalities were effective and whether there is a need to extend the provincial intervention.

The programme is opened to the media and will unfold as follows:

21 October 2014 - Abaqulusi local municipality, Vryheid
22 October - Imbabazane local municipality, Escort
23 October - Umvoti local municipality, Greytown

Select Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Women, Youth and Public Service, Select Committee On Security and Constitutional Development and Select Committee On Petitions and Executive Undertakings
