Parliament’s Presiding Officers to apply for their Smart ID Cards tomorrow, Wednesday, 23 Oct 2013 at 12h30 at Home Affairs Barrack Street Offices in Cape Town

The Presiding Officers of Parliament, Messrs Max Sisulu and Mninwa Mahlangu, will tomorrow, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 at 12h30, apply for their Smart ID Cards at Home Affairs offices in Barrack Street in Cape Town.

They will be joined by their deputies, Ms NomaIndia Mfeketho and Ms Thandi Memela.

On 15 October 2013, the Department of Home Affairs unveiled three offices which started taking applications for the Smart ID Card.

The three offices are Pretoria Local Office Large (Byron Place), Harrison Street in Johannesburg and Barrack Street in Cape Town.

To make sure that the system works optimally by the time all members of the public are invited to apply, Home Affairs Minister asked the department to start with the following categories of people:

  • Cabinet Ministers,  Deputy Ministers and Premiers
  • National  Assembly and National Council of Provinces
  • Judiciary members
  • Elderly (60 years and above, including people with disability within a radius of 25 km of the three offices)
  • First-time ID applicants (16 year old); as well as
  • Members of the South African National Editors Forum (SANEF).

An application costs R140.00, but is free for first-time ID applicants (those who have recently turned 16 years old).

Home Affairs sends a letter or a text message to individuals and invite them to apply at one of the three offices.

Members of the public are requested to take their green book IDs, R140.00, latest proof of residence (billing account), current contact number and original invitation letter with them when they apply for their smart cards.

Minister Pandor asked people to be patient, as other offices across the country will soon be open for smart card applications.
