Northern Cape Government to host Kimberley Process Mining Conference

The Northern Cape Provincial Government is gearing itself up to welcome a multitude of national and international dignitaries to the Kimberley process mining conference which is scheduled to take place from 4 - 7 June 2013 in our beautiful City of Kimberley. This high profile gathering will take place at the Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre.

The Kimberley Process (KP) is a collaborate event that was initiated by several governments, Industry bodies and civil society to stem the illegal trade of conflict diamonds. The Kimberley process is designed to stop the trade in illegal diamonds which has ravaged our continent and undermine democratically elected governments. Diamonds must solely be used to benefit our societies and improve the quality of life of our citizens.

The KP is comprised of 54 participants, representing 80 countries and its members account for approximately 98.8% of the global production of rough diamonds.

It is commendable for world leaders to take decisive action to clamp down on illegal diamond traders who are hell-bent on fuelling wars and destroying our economies. It is also appropriate and deserving for Kimberley to host this auspicious event because of its rich history of diamond exploration and also because the Kimberley process was founded in this City 10 years ago.

According to the Premier of the Northern Cape, Ms Sylvia Lucas, this is an opportune time for the Kimberley and the Northern Cape Province to showcase its tourism excellence.  “With Kimberley being the heart of the South African diamond industry, it is very appropriate that the conference returns to the Diamond City for its tenth anniversary celebrations.

This is a great chance to introduce this illustrious group of visitors to our province both as a superb business destination and a prime leisure travel destination. Hosting this conference is once again proof that Kimberley and the Northern Cape have the necessary infrastructure such as the state-of-the-art Mittah Seperepere convention centre to attract world-class events”.
