North West Acting MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs Paul Sebegoe will tomorrow 10 April 2013 invoke section 139(1) (b) of the Constitution in the three local municipalities namely Matlosana, Maquassie Hills and Ditsobotla Local Municipalities.
The decision follows the resolution taken by the North West Provincial Executive Council after some service delivery challenges in the above municipalities were identified. These challenges raised the need for the department to intervene through other legislative measures as there are evident signs of poor administration and governance.
The provincial government through the Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs has a legislative role to regularly monitor the performance and status of municipalities, provide support, build capacity and intervene where it is necessary.
MEC Sebego will announce the commencement of Section 139 intervention during various council meetings to be held as follows:
1. Matlosana Local Municipality: Klerksdorp - 9h00
2. Maquassi Hills Local Municipality: Wolmaranstadt – 12h00
3. Ditsobotla Local Municipality: Lichtenburg – 15h00
