The North West Provincial Legislature as a member of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) will be hosting the sixth Commonwealth Youth Parliament from the 2 to 8 November 2014 at the Legislature Chamber under the theme; “Deepening the Commonwealth’s Commitment to Democracy and Youth Development”.
The International Youth Parliament is an opportunity for our Commonwealth Young People to experience aspects of Parliamentary Democracy. It provides a platform for them to establish links with like-minded peers and it forms part of the CPA’s promotion of the Commonwealth and the concept of parliamentary democracy to young people.
The main objective of the CPA Youth Parliament is to educate participants about the Commonwealth and to demonstrate how Parliaments are able to make legislation; to debate matters of national and international importance; to demand accountability from those in government; to discuss legislation in committees; and to change government without recourse to civil disorder.
Youth from the commonwealth countries, whose ages range between 18 – 29, will participate in the discussions. A long programme that includes a mock parliament session and tours around the province has been developed.
A total of 25 Branches representing 7 of the 9 Regions of the CPA are due to participate together with some members of the Executive Committee.
Countries that will participate are as follows:
