North West Legislature hosts Health Sectoral Parliament, 7 Nov

On Wednesday, 7 November 2018, the North West Provincial Legislature, will host Health Sectoral Parliament under the theme “Celebrating the Centenary and Legacy of Mama Sisulu” in Bakgatla Gate at Moruleng (Moses Kotane Local Municipality) at 10h00.

The discussions will focus on the topic : “Balancing Access to Health and the Right of Healthcare providers to protest and its effect on communities.”

The objectives of the Sectoral parliament are:

  • To create platform for communities and healthcare providers to engage with Members of Provincial Legislature on Access to Health.
  • To create platform for Members of Provincial Legislature to conduct oversight over the department.
  • To work out the true impact that strikes have on healthcare following the lengthy labour action by healthcare providers in North West Province.

The right to health care services is provided for in three sections of the South African Constitution. These provide for access to health care services including reproductive health and emergency services; basic health care for children, and medical services for detained persons and prisoners.

Universal access is provided for in section 27(1)(a) which states that "Everyone has the right to have access to health care services, including reproductive health care..." Section 27(1)(b) provides for the State to " take reasonable legislative and other measures, within its available resources to achieve the progressive realisation of the right."

About 150 members of the community, mainly from the Moruleng area will attend the event. Stakeholders include, Horspersa, Denosa, Health Forums in Bojanala and Department of Health – North West
