On Wednesday, 28 January 2014, the North West Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Education will hold a meeting with the Education MEC, Wendy Matsemela, the senior management of the department, representatives of the Congress of the South African Trade Unions, the community and School Governing Body of Pica Pau Secondary School in Pomfret.
The meeting will discuss, amongst others, why the school has been underperforming for quite a number of years, acquiring less than 50% learner pass rate for matric in 2014. The school also does not have basic services, like water and sanitation due to the relocation of the community.
This forms part of the oversight visits that the committee is busy with in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District to assess the schools’ readiness for 2015 and challenges these schools are facing.

After the visits, the Portfolio Committee will then interact with the Department of Education to see how best those challenges can be addressed.
Members of the Provincial Legislature will also interact with the School Governing Bodies, learners and teachers to see how the North West Provincial Legislature can assist them.
