North West Health celebrates World Diabetes Day, 16 Nov

North West Health will on 16 November 2020 commemorate World Diabetes Day under the theme “The Nurse and Diabetes”.

World Diabetes Day is celebrated on the 14th of November every year across the world. The primary role of the campaign is to support and network with people who are susceptible to or are already living with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

Early studies have shown that about 25% of people who went to hospital with severe Covid-19 infections had diabetes. Those with diabetes were more likely to have serious complications and die from the virus.

To combat unhealthy lifestyle diseases, the Department of Health in partnership with North West University and Western Cape on Wellness, launched a North West Wellness Programme (NOW) in August 2019 with focus in Ngaka Modiri Molema and DR Kenneth Kaunda Districts. The programme aims at promoting and activating the adoption of healthy lifestyle behaviours and co-creation of wellness-enabling environments by all members of society.

The programme will be enhanced in Bojanala district with build-up activities towards World Diabetes Day by capacitating Tracers and Mobilisers to be NOW champions and to create awareness in communities.

Members of the media are therefore invited to the World Diabetes Day celebration which is scheduled to take place as follows:
