The late Nelson Mandela elderly neighbours in Qunu village will receive new furnished homes built by the provincial department through its destitute and vulnerable groups program.
These families were identified through the destitute and vulnerable groups program which responds immediately to the housing need of elderly, disabled, child headed and military veteran’s persons in the province. About 241 families from Qunu, Mqhekezweni and Mvezo villages will be built houses through the destitute intervention in the village. Of these (240), seven families are Mandela neighbours who will receive their new homes on Thursday, 31 July 2014. The beneficiaries are elderly people who currently live in collapsing mud structures.
The provincial department has already built 2 369 homes for destitute families living in less than humane conditions. A further 1 770 destitute families will be assisted during this financial year.
MEC responsible for Human Settlements in the province, Helen Sauls-August will be in Qunu to share the happy moments with these families. Entire Mandela Month activities in Qunu are as follows:
