Issues around tourism development and challenges at local government will come to the fore when the National Department of Tourism hosts the Local Government Tourism Conference. Themed, “Tourism Development: Why Local Government Matters”, the conference seeks to provide a platform for dialogue amongst public and private sector tourism stakeholders, including leadership to engage and share information on how to improve and grow this key economic sector.
The objectives of the conference will include:
- Communicating national tourism policies and strategies and how they impact on local government
- Deliberating on how best to capacitate and support Local Government to deliver the tourism mandate
- Launching the Local Government Tourism Development and Growth Support Programme
- Clarifying the roles of all spheres in tourism development, particularly local government
- Sharing best practices of tourism models in order to demystify the perceived unimportance of tourism at local government.
