The Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Paul Mashatile, is very proud to be supporting the Mitchell’s Plain Music Festival which takes place at the Westgate Mall from 27 to 29 September 2013 as part of the Heritage Month activities. Content Design Services (CDS) is hosting the festival. CDS is a unique creative agency that is specialising in township based marketing and promotions.
As part of its contribution towards social cohesion and nation building, the Department of Arts and Culture funded the festival, to enable the community of Mitchell’s Plain to celebrate Heritage Month in song and dance together with the rest of the country.
“This is another way in which the department acknowledges the importance of heritage as an avenue that promotes sustainable livelihoods and skills development. Efforts to find and showcase our country's talent must be encouraged and fully supported.
The creative sector can be an effective vehicle for economic growth, with local communities benefitting by hosting festival’s like these, said Mashatile. In the build-up to the festival auditions which took place on the 7th and14th. Another round will be held on 21 September 2013.
The festival will provide a range of benefits to those that are successful during the talent search. Mr Camillo Lombard, one of our renowned artists, will mentor the audition winners. All finalists will be given an opportunity to perform during the main festival on 27 to 29 September.
Top performers during the main festival will receive bursaries and some cash prizes to enable them to further their musical talents. Well known South African musicians, like Vicky Sampson; Chad Saaiman; The Rockets; Jimmy Nevis; Zayne Adam; Claire Phillips; Salome; CMI Band and Karin Kortje, will entertain the crowds during the main festival.
This festival is part of the DAC’s Mzansi Golden Economy strategy that aims to use the creative economy to unleash its potential to contribute to nation building, social cohesion, growing the economy, job creation and the building of sustainable livelihoods.
The organisers intend for the festival to become an annual feature on the Cape Town music calendar. “We wish the organisers strength and growth through the coming years. We hope this festival claims its space on the Music Map of South Africa,” concluded Mashatile.
