Minister Zweli Mkhize delivers Chief Mhlabunzima Maphumulo Memorial Lecture, 3 Mar

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr Zweli Mkhize will on Sunday, 3 March 2019, deliver a memorial lecture in honour of the late respected freedom fighter and brave traditional leader, Inkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumulo, a renowned freedom fighter who was brutally murdered at the height of violence against the liberation movement in KwaZulu-Natal in 1991.
 
Inkosi Maphumulo who has been honoured and hailed as a revolutionary ahead of his time was the leader of the Maphumulo people in at Maqongqo in Table Mountain outside Pietermaritzburg.  It was during his time that the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (CONTRALESA), of which he was President, took a more activist role yet at the height of violence which wrecked the Natal Midlands, he was seen as a prime peacemaker and mediator.
 
He was assassinated on February 25, 1991 at his home in Maritzburg – a killing that struck at the heart of liberation movement just a few years before democracy was ushered in. President Cyril Ramaphosa awarded him the Order of Luthuli In Gold posthumously by on April 28, 2018.
 
The Minister’s day will start with the visit to the grave at 8.30 in the morning followed by a church service. The lecture will be delivered at 2pm at the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg.
