Minister Susan Shabangu mobilises local communities in Virginia as part of 16 Days of Activism, 29 Nov

Crime hotspot turned into a communal garden and play park in a move to foster safer communities as part of the 16 Days Campaign

Open fields, high grass, dilapidated buildings and deserted areas tend to be crime hot spots where victims of gender based violence are often found. The creation of safer communities in the fight to end violence against women and children is one of the key focus areas of the 2014 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign.

This year’s campaign theme is Count Me In: Together moving a non-violent South Africa forward! The theme is aligned to the broader theme of the country and calls on all members of society to be counted in ending the scourge of violence against women and children.

On Saturday 29 November 2014, the Department of Women lead by the Minister in the Presidency Responsible for Women – Ms Susan Shabangu, the Free State Province, Lejweleputswa District and Matjhabeng Local Municipalities will together mobilize local communities in Virginia to partner with government in an effort to create safer communities by cleaning up all the crime ridden hotspots.

The activities of the day involve the cleaning of crime hotspots, greening the environment, the unveiling of a communal food security project as well as a play park which has been initiated on an area that used to be a crime hotspot.

The national 16 Days Campaign was officially launched on Tuesday 25 November by President Jacob Zuma in Reiger Park, Ekurhuleni.
