Minister in the Presidency to host Imbizo on violence against women and children in Thokoza
Minister in The Presidency Responsible for Women, Susan Shabangu, will on Sunday, 10th December 2017, host an Imbizo on Violence Against Women and Children.
The initiative is part of extending the 16 Days of Activism Campaign to a longer-term and more inclusive programme i.e. #365 of Activism for no Violence Against Women and Children (#365 Days of Activism).
The event will be hosted at the Thokoza Auditorium, Thokoza Township, City of Ekurhuleni Municipality, Gauteng Province.
The Department of Women has partnered with the Office of the Speaker of Ekurhuleni, in this initiative, and in line with that, Council Speaker Patricia Kumalo, will also be part of the Imbizo.
The Theme for 2017 is, “Count Me In: Together Moving A Non-Violent South Africa Forward”. Being the year of OR Tambo, the Sub-theme is: “OR Tambo and the Emancipation of Women.”
This year marks the 19th anniversary of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign in South Africa. The 16-Days of Activism Campaign focus on raising awareness of the negative impact of violence on women and children, as well as on society as a whole. It is also focused on seeking prevention interventions to the on-going violence perpetrated on women and children.
The Imbizo on Violence Against Women and Children is an extension of the, the Department of Women’s National Dialogues for No Violence against Women and Children. The objective of the initiative is to better understand lived experiences of communities in relation to violence against women and children. Findings of these Dialogues inform policy reviews at all levels of government to respond to causes.
Thus far, the National Dialogues have taken place in the Limpopo, Northern Cape, Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape provinces as part of the #365 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children.
