The Minister of Transport, Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga and the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) will on Friday, 22 December 2023 release provisional festive season road statistics and provide mid-term update on the country’s road safety awareness campaign.
The release of provisional festive season statistics by the Minister is a crucial step in assessing and enhancing the effectiveness of road safety measures during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
These statistics offer an early insight into the impact of the country's road safety awareness campaign and help identify trends and areas needing immediate attention.
Last month, the Department of Transport launched the festive season road safety campaign to curb crashes and reduce the carnage on the roads.
By analyzing these provisional figures, authorities can make informed decisions about road safety strategies, enforce necessary measures, and potentially save lives.
The campaign is also aimed at preventing negligent and reckless driving which could result in injuries and fatalities.
Festive season activities in South Africa are associated with year-end celebrations, economic industry slowdowns and year-end closures, increased traffic volumes and increased road crash incidents.
The campaign also aims to sustain road safety messaging and law enforcement operations.
Minister Chikunga will provide an update on the road safety campaign across the country thus far since the beginning of the festive period.
