Minister Sibusiso Ndebele to announce South Africa's top correctional official

South Africa’s top Correctional Official will be announced this week. Correctional Services Minister Sibusiso Ndebele will make the announcement on Friday, 1 March 2013, at the Department of Correctional Services 5th annual National Corrections Excellence Awards 2011/12.

The National Corrections Excellence Awards (NCEA) is about appreciating and encouraging excellence and professionalism in service delivery. The awards ceremony is in its 5th year of celebrating progressive milestones in the corrections community by hard working and committed officials.

The Department of Correctional Services, in partnership with Capitec Bank and GEMS, will be hosting the 5th NCEA to recognize corrections officials from around the country for the strides made in their field of work between 2011/12.  The gala evening will be addressed by Minister Ndebele, as the keynote speaker.

The award categories are as follows:

  • Education and Training Award - awarded to an official, who has demonstrated outstanding performance in educator duties, and contributing significantly to the advancement of the education and skills development programmes for offenders.
  • Batho Pele Award - this award recognizes individuals who excel in customer care, service to the public, general responsiveness and fairness, enhance the development and growth of people
  • Good Governance Award - this category awards champions of efficiency and effectiveness in the department; those who prevent fraud and corruption, enhance transformation and promote integrity.
  • Masibambisane Award - beneficiaries of this award champion societal participation in corrections, the social reintegration of offenders and restorative justice, and those who prevent re-offending.
  • Public Safety Award (Regions only) - this award honours individuals who excel in enhancing security and the humane treatment of offenders; those who reduce escapes and improve compliance with the security standards policy
  • Special Categories that include awards of the Minister, Deputy Minister and National Commissioner.
