Minister Shabangu to follow up on illegal mining activities

Mineral Resources Minister, Ms Susan Shabangu (MP), will tomorrow conduct a follow-up visit to the West Rand to check on the status of illegal mining activities in the area, and to provide feedback to the community.

This follows the Minister’s visit to the area in July this year to view ownerless and derelict mines, and to assess their viability for rehabilitation.

There has been an increase in illegal mining activities in Gauteng, which is not only unsafe for communities and the miners themselves, but is also destructive to the mines.

The Minister will be accompanied by the Chief Inspector of Mines, Mr David Msiza, the Deputy Director-General responsible for Mineral Regulation, Mr Joel Raphela, and members of the Illegal Mining Forum.

Details are as follows:

Date: 26 September 2013
Venue: Florida Civic Centre
Time: 14h00

Members of the media are invited to attend.
