Minister Senzo Mchunu hosts public dialogue on South Africa’s 2nd Generation Review, 25 Nov

Government, APRM and UNDP to host a public dialogue forum in preparation for the second Generation Review

Government, in partnership with the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Secretariat and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will hold a three-day Public Dialogue aimed at repositioning the APRM to ensure effective stakeholder participation in the Second Generation Review Process taking off in 2020.

Minister for the Public Service and Administration, Mr Senzo Mchunu, in his capacity as the APRM Focal Point for South Africa, will host the Public Dialogue to raise awareness of South Africa’s 2nd Generation Review to stakeholders.

The Dialogue will pave the way and set the tone for the roll-out plan of the review process and provide an opportunity to bring all the stakeholders to discuss strategic issues that are important to nation building and invigorate the substantive aspects of the APRM processes in South Africa.

The event will also be used as a platform for South Africa to engage and reflect on lessons learnt from other countries that have already undertaken the 2nd Generation Review, informed by the four thematic areas covered by APRM and the expanded mandate of the Mechanism.

These thematic areas include democratic and political governance, economic governance and management, socio-economic and corporate governance.

Members of the media are invited to the event, scheduled as follows:
Date: Monday, 25 November 2019
Time: 8h30
Venue: Coastlands Hotel, Umhlanga Rocks, Durban

The APRM is a mutually agreed instrument voluntarily acceded to by African Union (AU) Member States as an African self-monitoring mechanism to foster good governance in the continent through a systematic peer learning and self-assessment mechanism.

Its primary purpose is to foster the adoption of policies, standards and practices that lead to political stability, high economic growth, sustainable development and accelerated sub-regional and continental economic integration through sharing of experiences and reinforcement of successful and best practice, including identifying deficiencies and assessing the needs for capacity building.

The APRM Secretariat works with Member States to develop and implement the culture of good governance, to enable the respective countries to monitor and evaluate their pace of development and ensure better life for their citizens.

South Africa will also take over Chairpersonship of the APRM programme from the Republic of Chad beginning of next year.
