Minister Senzo Mchunu hands over completed Phase 1 Vaal-Gamagara Project in Northern Cape, 31 Mar

The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Mr Senzo Mchunu, will be in the Northern Cape from 30 March 2023, to hand over a 75-kilometre Phase 1 Vaal Gamagara Pipeline project in Kathu. The hand over will be followed by a Rural Water Seminar in the John Taolo Gaotsewe District Municipality on 31 March 2023.

The Vaal Gamagara Project worth R1.7 billion, entails the functional replacement of the existing steel pipeline with a new pipeline to provide assurance of current and future demands by all users. The main water users to benefit from the project include various mines, municipalities, agricultural sector and Transnet. Approximately 6 000 households will also benefit from the project.

The Department of Water and Sanitation will soon resume Phase 2 of Vaal Gamagara Project, which is also about the upgrading of the existing 260 km pipeline from the Vaal River pump station to Roscoe near Kathu.

Minister Mchunu will also lead a Rural Water Seminar to interrogate issues of supply of water to rural communities and to the farming communities. Various stakeholders that include institutions of higher learning and the Water Research Commission will form part of the seminar to deliberate on the issues at hand.
