Minister Senzeni Zokwana visits areas on West Coast affected by harmful algal bloom, 10 Feb

Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Senzeni Zokwana will this afternoon, at 13h00, visit the areas on the West Coast that are affected by the harmful algal bloom.

Since the weekend, close to 130-tons of West Coast Rock Lobster have washed out in Eland’s Bay following a drastic drop in oxygen levels in the water.

The bloom, around 80mk’s long and 3km’s wide stretches from Dwarskersbos to north of the Oliphant’s River.

Community volunteers, officials of the Cederberg Municipality, the West Coast District Municipality and of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries are currently busy cleaning up the Eland’s Bay beachfront where around 70-tons of WCRL washed out this morning.

The South African Police Service and provincial and municipal traffic officials are patrolling the area.
