Minister of Science and Technology to hand over mobile lab in Cofimvaba, Eastern Cape

The Minister of Science and Technology, Mr Derek Hanekom, will officially hand over a mobile science outreach unit to the Eastern Cape Department of Education in the Cofimvaba District on 9 April 2014.

The hand-over is part of the Technology for Rural Education and Development (Tech4Red) initiative, led by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), which aims to establish whether the introduction of innovative technologies can improve the quality of teaching and learning.

In this regard, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research has been tasked with managing the building of the science centre, and the Sasol Inzalo Foundation, a partner of the DST in the Cofimvaba development initiative, has been tasked with facilitating the training of staff.

The science centre will contribute to the overall intention of creating a science and technology-literate society and inspiring young people to pursue higher education studies and careers in science, engineering and technology (SET).

It will also enhance the implementation of the Department of Basic Education's (DBE's) National Strategy for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education.

Minister Hanekom will be accompanied by the Executive Mayor of the Intsika Yethu Local Municipality in Cofimvaba, Ms Koliswa Vimbayo, as well as the Head of the Eastern Cape Department of Education, Mr M Ngozo, and a Sasol Inzalo Foundation representative, Ms Mpho Letlape.

All media are invited.
