Minister of Science and Technology Derek Hanekom to launch the National Recordal System for Indigenous Knowledge Systems

The Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom, will launch the National Recordal System (NRS) for indigenous knowledge systems on 24 May at Moruleng Stadium in Rustenburg, North West, at 9h00.

The Minister will be accompanied by the traditional leader of the Bakgala-Ba-Kgafela community, Kgosi Pilane, and the North West Premier, Thandi Modise.

The NRS will be the region's largest initiative to document and record indigenous knowledge (IK). It will collect IK at grassroots level and will be a valuable resource, among other things improving our understanding of how local and indigenous communities can empower themselves to manage their own development.

The initiative will secure the rights of communities, guilds and other IK holders and practitioners to their indigenous knowledge. It will also create a platform for economic and social development through IK networks, documentation centres and information and community technology.

This knowledge will be recorded, catalogued, validated and used by researchers in this innovative field.

All media are invited to attend.
