Minister Lamola to officially close the 2023 Funda Mzantsi Championships
The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola, will on Friday 06
October 2023, officially close the 13th Funda Mzantsi Championships which brought book clubs; learners; and inmates together to compete for top honours in impromptu reading, debating, spelling bee and book reviewing.
Winners who through their skills saw off competition from their peers, will be announced during the closing ceremony where their talents will be dully recognised. Standard for the 2023 championships was high sparking robust conversations on various topics. All participants concur that the championships provided them a platform to improve their debating and reading skills, as well as promoting critical thinking.
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is committed to improving literacy levels in the country in an effort to contribute towards a knowledgeable and conscientious society. Over 290 inmates participated in the championships as part of their rehabilitation where they were equipped with skills to become better and law abiding citizens.
DCS will also use the closing ceremony to pin insignias to newly appointed senior correctional officials who are expected to contribute towards creating safer communities in the country.
