Minister Pemmy Majodina conducts oversight visit at Mokolo and Crocodile Water Augmentation Project in Limpopo, 20 Oct

Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pemmy Majodina together with Deputy Minister, David Mahlobo, will conduct an oversight visit to key construction sites of the second phase of the Mokolo and Crocodile Water Augmentation Project (MCWAP-2A) in Lephalale and Thabazimbi, Limpopo, on Tuesday, 20 October 2026.

MCWAP-2A is a R19.7 billion water transfer project taking raw water from the Crocodile River through an approximately 140 km water transfer pipeline between Thabazimbi and Lephalale. The project comprises of an abstraction weir, the pipeline, pump stations, and associated ancillary infrastructure, River Management System and an Operational Control Centre. Once completed, it will provide an additional bulk raw water source for major users, including Eskom’s Medupi and Matimba power stations and Exxaro’s Grootegeluk mine, as well as commercial and industrial users. Beyond supporting major economic users, strengthening the Waterberg District Municipality’s bulk water infrastructure is important for the communities that depend on a reliable and sustainable water system.

The purpose of the oversight visit is to assess progress on this strategic water infrastructure project, which is critical to strengthening long-term water security and supporting economic and industrial activity in the district. Minister Majodina will inspect construction progress, engage project teams and stakeholders on challenges and identify interventions needed to keep implementation on track.

The project is being implemented by the Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA), the Department’s entity responsible for financing and implementing bulk raw water infrastructure.

The programme will start with a walkabout of the pipeline-laying works. The delegation will then travel to Thabazimbi to inspect the Left Bank Abstraction Works, including the jet grouting works and Tocolite site.

Media will have an opportunity to see the work underway, including the Section 6 pipeline-laying works and the Left Bank Abstraction Works and to gain insight into how the project will contribute to the District’s future water security.
