Minister Paul Mashatile meets creative industries role-players, 20 Mar

Arts and Culture Minister, Mr Paul Mashatile, will deliver a keynote address on the establishment of the Creative Industries’ Federation during a stakeholder meeting to be held on Thursday, 20 March 2014, at Market Theatre, Newtown Precinct in Johannesburg.

The meeting is convened as a sequel to the Minister's appointment, last week, of an Interim Executive Committee that will work towards the establishment of the South African Creative Industry Federation, (SACIF). SACIF will represent all sectors including music, film and broadcasting, publishing, visual arts, crafts, performing arts and design, amongst others.

In 2009, President Jacob Zuma, met with local artists as part of efforts to understand their challenges and finding comprehensive responses to those challenges, chief amongst them being fragmentation. Even though efforts have been made to unite the industry and find ways to make it sustainable and globally-competitive, the sector continues to be fragmented and as a result, the DAC had in the last few months been engaging with the arts sector on how best to address this challenge.

The planned meeting forms part of an integrated approach to nurture conducive conditions for the industry to unite and speak in one voice. Through this approach, the department seeks to formalise the sector as an industry, a role player in the economy and to create an enabling environment for the growth of the sector.

Members of the media are invited to attend.
