The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor will deliver the opening remarks at the Biennial Arthur Bleksley Lecture to be delivered by the renowned astronomer Professor Kenneth Freeman, on Tuesday, 1 July 2014 in the Senate Room at Wits University in Johannesburg.
Popularly known as the ‘father of dark matter’, Prof Freedman’s will deliver the lecture titled: Dark Matter in the Universe.
Prof Freedman was recently awarded the coveted 2014 Gruber Foundation Cosmology Prize - a Nobel Prize equivalent for astronomers. He is an Australian astronomer and astrophysicist. Currently, he is the Professor of Astronomy in the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Mount Stromlo Observatory of the Australian National University in Canberra.
Professor Freedman’s address will be followed by another renowned astronomer at Wits, Prof David Block, who will deliver a lecture titled: Detectives in Astronomy and Photography. Prof Block’s lecture will discuss and expose the greatest scientific misconduct and frauds in these disciplines.
The special lecture evening is in honour of Professor Block, who celebrates 30 years at Wits and 60th birthday this year.
