Minister Pandor to deliver keynote address at the launch of the HSRC's 2014 State of the Nation publication

The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor will deliver the keynote address at the launch of the Human Science and Research Council's 2014 State of the Nation publication today.

The theme of the 2014 edition is "20 years of freedom and democracy".

The publication covers the following thematic areas:

  • Politics and the State: The state of constitutional democracy after 20 years; analysis of the National Development Plan; freedom of information; promoting accountability and preventing corruption in the public service, and the role of traditional authorities.
  • Economics: From the Reconstruction and Development Programme to the National Development Plan and the New Growth Path; mining and energy; rural development; and macroeconomic policies.
  • Society: Substantive equality and gender; the development of social protection policies; the status and well-being of children; the state of basic education; the state of mathematics education; the media; land; securing the future; and reconciliation.
  • Health and Environment: HIV/Aids and child-headed households; primary health care; climate change; the green economy; and spatial dynamics and environmental safeguards for cities.
  • South Africa and the World: South Africa's role in the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) grouping from different perspectives; globalisation and South Africa's role in regional economic growth; the governance of natural resources in Africa; and transitional justice and reconciliation in Africa.

Various government ministers, constitutional entities, high-level foreign government officials (including representatives of BRICS), business leaders, academics, and civil society organisations are expected to attend the launch.
