Minister Nzimande announces names and appoints Interim Council members for new universities in the Northern Cape and Mpumalanga provinces

Two critical milestones towards the establishment of the new universities in the Northern Cape and Mpumalanga provinces as juristic entities will be achieved on Thursday, 4 July 2013, when Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, announces the names of the new institutions and appoints members of the Interim Councils for each.

These steps, together with determining the physical location and official address of the institutions, the type of universities and the completion of the stakeholder consultation process, lay the foundation for proclaiming the new universities as juristic entities as required by the Higher Education Act.

“This occasion is the culmination of several years of meticulous planning and cooperation between and among a large number of stakeholders who have committed themselves to Government’s vision of expanding access to higher education opportunities for our young people in South Africa. I will use this occasion to share with members of the Interim Councils the important role they have in steering these new institutions through the first months of existence and shaping their future in line with this commitment,” says Mr Nzimande.

Members of the media are invited to a media briefing by Minister Nzimande and the details are as follows:

Time: 18h00 to 18h30
