Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, will on Monday 11 March address academics and researchers from leading developing economies at a dinner hosted by his department in Durban as part of the build-up events towards the 5th BRICS Summit.
The Summit, under the theme: “BRICS and AFRICA: Partnership for Development, Integration and Industrialisation”, is due to take place in Durban from the 26 to 27 March 2013.
“One of the most important elements of BRICS cooperation is in knowledge production and academic cooperation, and to achieve our goals – both in Africa and globally – we need to constantly strengthen our scientific and technical knowledge so as to deepen our understanding of our societies and improve our development strategies,” Minister Nzimande said.

Minister Nzimande said the BRICS countries would hold the summit to discuss matters of mutual interest for purposes of finding ways to improve living standards in the member countries while also seeking ways to strengthen cooperation with the goal of creating a better, fairer and more peaceful world.
“As the BRICS we seek to enhance cooperation to promote global stability, security and prosperity. To this end, we in the higher education and training sector must also deepen dialogue between our academics, develop joint research projects, academic exchange projects and also strengthen and expand cooperation with regards to post-graduate studies,” Minister Nzimande said.
