Minister Mapisa-Nqakula delivers keynote address at steel cutting ceremony at Southern African Shipyards, Durban
Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula will deliver the keynote address at the steel cutting ceremony for the SA Navy’s Hydrographic Survey Vessel (HSV), which will be in support of various national imperatives, including but not limited to, Operation Phakisa, the dictates of the National Hydrographic Act and broader maritime security requirements.
The HSV is an extremely complex science vessel that is being built 100 percent in South Africa by Southern African Shipyards (SAS) which is a 100 percent black-owned company and 67 percent black women-owned.
The building of a vessel of this complexity is not only a South African first but an African first. At this stage, SAS has successfully completed the vessel design and tank testing phase and they are now ready to commence construction.
These are the kind of projects we would like more of our people to be part of. Not only is this innovative, but it will contribute to economic growth and youth development, said Minister Mapisa-Nqakula.
