Minister of Communications launches countdown to Analogue Switch-off in Senekal, Free State
Minister of Communications Ms Nomvula Mokonyane will launch the Analogue Switch-off countdown in Senekal, Thabo Mofutsanyane District Municipality, Free State on Thursday the 30th of August 2018. This is a milestone event in the march towards the digital era for South Africa and will showcase the readiness of the country for digital migration.
Minister Mokonyane announced two months ago that the priority for the Broadcasting Digital Migration will be to switch off the Free State province end of December 2018, marking the end of dual illumination, an interim period in which both analogue and digital signals are transmitted. Analogue Switch-off is a process in which analogue television broadcasting is converted to and replaced by digital television.
Households that are on existing satellite television platforms such as pay-tv need not worry as they are already on digital platforms. These are DSTV, OpenView HD and StarSat.
There is a total of approximately 887 analogue transmitters across South Africa, 41 of these are situated in the Free State province. These analogue transmitters in the Free State province will be switched off end of December 2018.
Households that do not qualify to receive the government decoders - in other words those that earn above the stipulated threshold of R3200 per month - have an option of buying a new integrated digital television if they choose to use their existing analogue TV sets. DTT decoders with the Go-Digital logo will also be available for purchase in most retailers in due course.
